by Sable Hunter

How do you determine the measure of a man? By his power, his money, his physical appearance? All his life, Jaxson McCoy measured his worth in the strength of his body and the sweat of his brow. He falls for a woman who is his equal, an Olympic athlete whose mind is as agile as her body.

Their perfect world is torn apart when a tragic accident leaves Jaxson less than whole. He pushes everyone away, including the woman who worships the ground he walks on. Tamara knows he stands tall, whether he is on one leg or two, but she gets no chance to prove her devotion before he builds a wall between them too high for her to climb.

Time has a way of healing wounds and Jaxson’s are no exception, but when he attempts to build a bridge to Tamara, he discovers she has suffered her own loss, her life shattered by a blow she sees no hope of overcoming.

For these two people to heal one another, they will have to redefine their definition of perfect, because Tamara is quite a lady and Jaxson is a helluva man.

“Next up is Jaxson McCoy,” the announcer’s voice came booming over the loudspeaker. The raucous rodeo crowd immediately grew silent. “I know for many of you, Jaxson is as much of a draw as Garth. This cowboy is a favorite on the circuit. He’s a big man to be a bull rider. At six-foot-four-inches and two-hundred-fifty pounds, McCoy makes the bulls work for their living.”

The women in the audience were on their feet, all of them wanted to catch a glimpse of the handsome cowboy. The unseen man in the booth continued his introduction of Jaxson’s ride. “We’ve got a record crowd tonight, folks. Everyone is eager to see if this bull rider will be the one to master the brutal Bocephus, son of the legendary Bodacious. He’s as dangerous as his father. No cowboy has managed to successfully stay on this monster bull for the full eight seconds. He’s put five men in the hospital, the rest of them on their keister. Bocephus hasn’t been conquered in four years.”

Jaxson sat on the hulking, red Beefmaster halfway listening to the broadcaster build up interest in his ride. He hadn’t told Tamara what bull he drew, he hadn’t wanted her to worry more than necessary. This competition wasn’t only about big money, it was about bragging rights. There were many who wanted him to win and more than a few who’d love to see him fall flat on his ass. He, for one, voted for surviving. Squeezing his legs around the heaving sides of the bull, he well knew the moment the gate flew open, the vicious animal would become a hurricane of deadly hooves and horns.

A breathless silence fell on the stadium as Jaxson performed his normal ritual, whispering a familiar bit of the Good Book from memory. He wasn’t exactly the religious type, but there were things his mother had taught him that stuck – and this was one of those things. “Fear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God, I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” As the last word faded on his lips, the chute sprang open and Jaxson’s whole world exploded into overdrive. Bocephus was a solid ton of pure energy. With violent, vicious twists the huge bull launched himself into the air and slung his entire body weight first to the left and then to the right. Jaxson moved instinctively with the bull, knowing the only way he would ride out this perfect storm would be by defying a formidable force of nature.

Allowing his mind to become perfectly still, Jaxson visualized himself as an extension of the animal’s body. He didn’t fight the pitch and roll of the deadly bull but anticipated the direction Bocephus would lunge and went with it. No matter how you count it, this was eight seconds of teeth-jarring, muscle-wrenching, mind-blowing adrenaline rush.

When the air horn blasted, Jaxson could hear the jubilation of his fans. Not one who chose to wear a helmet, he waved his trade-mark trade-mark white Stetson in the air. Mixed in with the noise of the crowd, he could hear the female version of catcalls from the buckle bunnies. Too bad. Tonight, he wasn’t interested in hooking up with any of them. There was someone waiting for him in the stands. As he bailed off Bocephus, side-stepping the razor-sharp set of horns swiping out at him, he thanked heaven for the bullfighters who risked their lives distracting the enraged beast.

As Bocephus danced off to one side, Jaxson looked up in the stands to Tamara and held up his hat, giving her a wink and a promise. “For you, beautiful!” he called out.

Tamara waved back, thrilled at the sight. From where she sat, she could see the whole stadium – and what she saw made her blood run cold. The big bull had run off to one side, avoiding the clowns who were striving to drive him back into the pen. Instead, he headed straight for Jaxon. “Jaxson!” she screamed. Others saw what she saw, and they too began to scream. “Jaxson! Look behind you!”

He didn’t get the chance to turn around. Before he could react, the big bull hit him in the back hard enough to knock him down. He was still breathing, nothing was broken – but when he looked up, it was to see that Bocephus had vaulted into the air and was about to come down – right on top of him.

Tamara screamed!

Time froze.

Excerpt

“Whose idea was it to get an apartment on the third floor of a building with no fucking elevator?” she groaned, holding her head.

“If I recall, you wanted this place because of the rooftop deck. Said you could watch the sunrise whenever you wanted like you were on top of the world.”

“Yes, the roof!” Bristol nodded and clapped her hands excitedly. “Let’s go up there and look at the stars.”

“You need to get some sleep, B,” he protested as she pulled him through the small apartment to the stairway he knew led above.

“I will, but we can look at the stars now, then when you’re gone, I’ll think of you every time I look up at them. I’ll know you’re looking at the same stars, thinking of me.”

Roan knew she probably didn’t intend her words to be so sentimental, but the alcohol was acting like a truth serum, and it shut down her inhibitions. She rarely allowed anyone to see this side of her. Following her up the tiny flight of stairs, he was soon seated on a wooden lounge chair, with her between his legs, her back against his chest, his arms wrapped around her to keep her warm.

“See, there’s my favorite, Ursa Major, the Big Bear,” she pointed upwards.

“Isn’t that the Big Dipper?”

“Yes and no. The Big Dipper is part of the Big Bear, but they’re still two different constellations,” she explained. “My dad taught me that when I was tiny.”

Her voice was wistful when she spoke of her recently deceased father, and Roan hugged her tighter. Having lost his own mother to uterine cancer when he was eleven, he sympathized with her pain.

“Roan, how much longer do you think you can take doing these missions?” she asked randomly.

Stunned silent, he could only shrug behind her.

“You’ve been gone more than you’ve been home. Don’t you get lonely?”

“Sure, every Marine gets lonely occasionally, but I’m one of the lucky ones because I get constant contact. You and my family send me packages, letters, and cards, and I can use FaceTime on some missions, Skype on others. There are plenty of guys over there who don’t have access to any of that.”

“Would you stay if they gave you the option?”

Roan tensed and frowned down at the top of her head, “What do you mean?”

“I don’t know. I just hate when you’re gone. My world seems off-kilter somehow.” She sat up abruptly. “I’m like Lucy with no Ethel.”

“Excuse me?” He felt his eyebrow arch in question. “I am no Ethel. If anyone here is Lucy, it’s me.”

“Nah, Lucy was always instigating trouble, and Ethel just went along with it.”

“Which is exactly why I’m the Lucy in this relationship,” Roan laughed. She shivered, and he tugged her back against him. Instead of resuming their spooned position, she lay sideways against him, her shoulder on his chest, her hands dangerously close to forbidden territory. “If you’re cold, we should go back downstairs.”

“I don’t want to yet. I like having you all to myself,” she sighed and tipped her face up, the pale moonlight barely lighting her face properly. “Have you ever thought about giving it up? The Marines, I mean?”

“Aw, B, of course, it’s crossed my mind. Every man who’s had to watch a friend die or had to kill someone has second-guessed his career choice, but I was born to be a Marine. Giving it up would be like giving up air. My body just wouldn’t work anymore.”

She nodded, “I figured you would say something like that.”

“I always come back.”

But then again, maybe not. As soon as she meets the resident farmer, Mack thinks of many ways they could burn calories together. When he asks her to help him with farm work as an alternative to a daily regime of yoga, meditation, and pushups, she accepts, picturing hours of gratuitous sex.
Hot body aside, Eazy Phatt is a pain in the neck. Instead of becoming her lover, he turns Mack into a farmhand, keeping her busy from first light till bed. She drives tractor, stacks hay, picks apples, shucks corn, and somewhere along the way, falls in love. And that all happens before the shooting starts.

#CMCon18 – A Chat with Renee George, a Review, and a Free Book

Coffee and a Chat at the Beach with #CMCon18 Author Renee George

As one of the #CMCon18 featured bloggers, I get to chat with a few of the talented authors who will be hitting the beach for Coastal Magic 2018 in Daytona Beach, February 22 – 25th.  Since we are in the first quarter of a new year, I thought we’d talk about beginnings and first times.

The second CMC Featured Author joining me for Coffee and a Chat at the Beach is my friend, Renee George.

USA Today Bestselling Author, Renee George writes paranormal mysteries and romances because she loves all things whodunit, Otherworldly, and weird. Also, she wishes her pittie, the adorable Kona Princess Warrior, and her beagle, Josie the Incontinent Princess, could talk. Or at least be more like Scooby-Doo and help her unmask villains at the haunted house up the street.

When she’s not writing about mystery-solving werecougars or the adventures of a hapless psychic living among shapeshifters, she’s preyed upon by stray kittens who end up living in her house because she can’t say no to their sweet, furry faces. (Someone stop telling them where she lives!) Okay, the first kitten totally showed up one day and suddenly she’s got a new pet named Simon. I think he told his pals what a soft heart Renee has.

She lives in Mid-Missouri with her family and spends her non-writing time doing really cool stuff…like watching TV and cleaning up dog poop.

Coffee and a Chat with Renee

Tamye: What inspired you to become a writer? Did you always want to be a writer or did you come to it later in life?

Renee: When I was four years old, I told my mother that I wanted to write stories. She told me I would have to learn how to spell first. “grin” I wasn’t deterred. I already knew my alphabets, so I used to string letters together and drive her nuts by asking if I made a real word. So, I guess I would fall into the category of always knowing.

Tamye: What was the inspiration for your first book?

Renee: My first book is one that no one has ever seen. It was an 800-page high fantasy tome inspired by the likes of David Eddings, R.A.Salvatore, and Anne McCaffrey. It’s not good, but it taught me a lot of the “don’ts” when it comes to writing. My first paranormal book was inspired by Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake books. Those were the first stories I’d read where the monsters weren’t always the bad guys, and often, they were the heroes. It made me fall in love with urban fantasy and all things supernatural.

Tamye: This is your first time at Coastal Magic. What influenced your decision to attend?

Renee: I decided to attend because I was asked in a really flattering way that made me feel like Sally Fields at the Oscars. Besides, Damon Suede promised me that it would be a great time. Add to that, I get to room with one of my best friends, Robyn Peterman, and I couldn’t say no!

Tamye: Do you craft?

Renee: I actually have crafted in the past, candles, crocheting, wooden signs, essential oil blending, etc. I just haven’t done it in a very long time. I get all my crafty things from my BFF Michele Bardsley.  LOL

Renee just released a new book in her Peculiar Mysteries series, and I was lucky enough to get my hands on an advanced copy.

Furred Lines (Peculiar Mysteries Book 6)

While I’ve read every book in this hilarious series, this book can easily be read as a stand alone.  But you’ll probably want to go back and read the rest of the books in the series because they rock, and you’ll want to find out more about all the intriguing characters that make up this unique shifter town.

Our main characters, Mr. Hot, hot, hot ….. Senior Agent FBI man, Dominic Tartan, and Special Agent, (Yeah, she’s special, as in wereraccoon special.  And just like one of those little bandits, she can pick a lock in no time flat), Dr. Nicole Taylor.  He’s gruff, and she’s a bit klutzy, at least around him.  Things soon heat up.  Between the two agents sizzling hot chemistry, (Oops, not supposed to jump the senior agents bones.) and the dead bodies….   Yep, someone’s not behaving.

Things just get better when you add in the dynamics of returning to Nicole’s hometown of Peculiar.  Parents, ex-boyfriends, ex-girlfriends, possible killers, wacko survivalists, and a few other quirky individuals to keep things interesting, or embarrassing, depending on who you ask.

Furred Lines made me smile, laugh, cry and cheer.  It also managed to surprise me a time or two.  The story flowed well, and the characters had a depth that made them real.  I loved this book so much, I went out and bought my own copy as soon as it was released.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good laugh, and a town full of shapeshifters with their mystery.

Excerpt

“I’ll take the open-faced roast beef sandwich piled high with mash potatoes and extra brown gravy,” a man behind me said. I whipped my head around hard enough to wrench my neck. Dominic Tartan stood a few feet away. He raised his brow at my unasked question. “I finished up early in Springfield. Thought I would join you for lunch.”

I’d texted him about my plans, but I didn’t think he’d track me down.

He turned his gaze to the table, and his expression brightened immensely when he saw Chavvah. “Well, hello, Chav. Is it still Trimmel, or has the good doctor nailed you down yet?”

“He nails me every chance he gets,” she said as if she was commenting on the weather. The slight uptick of the corner of her mouth and the way she reached up to move a lock of hair from her shoulder told me she didn’t mind the flirting, but I’d seen her with Doctor Smith, and if Tartan thought he had a chance in hell with the tall, leggy brunette, he was sorely mistaken.

“So not married.” Dominic smiled.

“We’ve set a date,” she said.

“March twentieth,” Sunny said. “The Spring equinox or some such nonsense. Werewolves are a pain in the ass.”

“True story,” Chav said, “and they sure know how to ruin a perfectly good party.”

Dom spread his hands. “Well, if it’s a party you want…”

Selena, who had been waiting patiently for our orders, giggled.

I stood up. “There isn’t room at this table for another chair. Agent Tartan and I will take the one Mr. And Mrs. Smart just left.”

Selena’s smile grew tight. “I’ll get it cleaned up for you two.” She looked at the deputy. “Should I make it for three?”

I said, “yes,” while Dominic said, “no.”

Eldin shook his head. “You two go on. I’ll finish lunch with Sunny and Chav.”

After we sat at the new table, a small one near the kitchen, I sipped my coffee and glared at Dominic.

He ordered an iced tea then turned to me and said, “What?”

In a quiet shout, the kind that’s all about tone without volume, I said, “What top secret information did you learn that Eldin couldn’t hear?”

“Other than what’s in the files, there’s nothing new to learn.”

“But the victim is definitely a therianthrope?”

“They’re rabbit shifters.”

“That explains the five kids and another on the way. Though, we have a woman in town, a deer shifter, who would give those rabbits a run for their money.”

“You mean Ruth Thompson.”

I assessed him again. “I get you spent a week here a couple years back, but damn, you really paid attention.”

“Ruth is a friend of Chav’s.”

A knot formed in my throat. “Just how well did you get to know Chavvah Trimmel?”

“As well as any man could with a jealous werewolf breathing down his neck.”

I snorted. “So not as well as you’d have liked.”

Dom winked at me, and the knot in my throat tightened.

“Do any of the victims have ties to Peculiar? I really don’t see how any investigation here is going to produce a lead.”

“Actually, there is one thing that ties them all together.” He leaned forward. “They were all at the Tri-State Council Jubilee here in two summers ago.”

“When did you find this out?” Because if it was sooner than the past four hours I was going to be unhappy.

“I got the information when I was driving here from Springfield. You know Wilhelmina Boden, your dad’s new deputy?”

“Oh, yeah, the red-head engaged to Brady Corman.”

Dom’s eyes darkened. “That’s her. She was head of security for the Tri-State Council before her move to Peculiar. She managed to get her hands on a complete list of all the people who attended the event. She gave your dad and me a copy.”

“Did you find out if there are any more killings in this same vein prior to the last three?”

He shook his head. “Not yet.” I noticed for the first time how tired he looked around the eyes.

“We should get to the interviews with the Blonde Bear owners and staff. Mr. Lieberman’s life may depend on it. Though I don’t know what we can learn here. Strangers stick out like sore thumbs. I think Blondina and Roger would have told my dad if anyone around here fit the bill.”

“That’s just it.” Dom rubbed his chin. “I think it’s someone who lives here.”

I nodded, not wanting to agree, but there was no other explanation. “We need to start a list of people who could leave town without drawing suspicion.”

“Agreed,” Dom said. “And we need to do it in a way that doesn’t alert the unsub.”

In a town of less than two-thousand people, my partner was asking for a whole lot of impossible, but there were other things to consider with this criminal.

“This guy is smart. Organized. So, let’s narrow it down by skilled employment or white-collar work.” I planted my elbow on the table as another thought occurred to me. “This killer is real ballsy. He takes his victims outside their homes and returns them. That takes a lot of confidence.”

I felt a hand on my shoulder and turned to see Sunny Haddock staring down at me. Her eyes were glazed, and her very worried-looking best friend stood behind her.

“What is it?”

Chav shook her head. “I’ve never seen her like this.”

With a blank stare in my direction, Sunny said in a monotone voice, “Duck when you see the yellow man. Step over the crack. Skipped stones on the lake. Beware the lying owl. Falling glass. Death.” Her voice grew even more hollow. “Death strikes at twelve.” She blinked, her pupils flexing to focus. “What in the world? That’s weird.”

I let out a noisy breath I’d been holding. “You’re not kidding.”

Review By Tamye

At the mention of dark chocolate and melted marshmallows, normally S’mores and friends hanging around a campfire would come to mind. Not anymore. Now, it’s Sven Anders with a voice that can make your insides melt and your panties wet.

I wouldn’t call it love-at-first-sight. More like lust and attitude with a dollop of misunderstanding and accusations. Nothing a relaxing swim, and a few days in paradise can’t overcome, right?

The characters have depth. Their foibles make them real, even endearing. The story-line is an engrossing journey of growth and discovery, littered with moments of laughter, tears, and heartache. Both theirs and mine.

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys contemporary, island or vacation romance.

Disclaimer: I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Excerpt:

The empty glass of Crown and Coke reminded Yuri she needed this vacation. They’d only landed an hour ago, and she’d already downed two glasses, was anticipating a third, and hoping by number four, she’d be numb to all the drama. The constant ringing of her cell phone triggered resentful emotions she normally wouldn’t feel towards her father. She needed space, and he refused to give it to her. Taking a deep breath, Yuri shoved her phone into her carry-on bag. I’m not going to spend this trip drowning my sorrows. She’d tackle her demons and make life-changing decisions after her trip. Right now, she needed to get the room key, change, and get her day started.

The sun’s rays kissed her skin, lending to the tropical atmosphere. A blend of coconut oil, salt water, fresh fruit, and the unique scent of fragrant blooms invaded her senses. Peace. Yuri took a deep breath as she walked into the front lobby of the resort. Dark browns with touches of orange gave the place a welcoming feel. There was the perfect amount of light highlighting the entrance. A curtain of water showered the side walls, decorated with a tropical mural. Yuri typically retreated to her room upon arriving. Not this trip. Exploring hit the top of her list while she vacationed. She had no intention of remaining behind closed doors.

“This is what I needed.”

Both of her friends, Naima and Leah, walked ahead toward the concierge. Only one room for the three of them. A junior bungalow suite that sat atop the water with its own ocean pool.

Sven Anders Teaser

“Excuse me,” a deep voice boomed behind her. She didn’t turn around and refused to look. Instead, moved out of the man’s way. That his voice evoked images of dark chocolate drizzled over melted marshmallows meant one thing: bad news. Any time a man’s voice reminded Yuri of food, one of two things happened. Either she created the flavor, or she took a taste. It’s what had happened with her last relationship. Thomas reminded her of caramelized sugar and butter. Yeah, and where did that get you? This man’s voice led to thoughts of simple ingredients. Two. Dark chocolate and marshmallows. A Bitter-sweet flavor melted over a cloud of decadent bliss. The perfect combination of sex and sin.

“Yuri, the room sleeps three,” Naima’s voice pulled her back to reality.

“If you can work with it, so can I. Otherwise, I can grab a separate room.”

“Girl, don’t be crazy, we’ve all slept in tight spaces, we can make this work. Besides, I don’t plan on living in my room. Do you?”

No, she didn’t.

She’d already made plans.

“I have an appointment for snorkeling, in,”—Yuri gazed at her Fitbit for the time— “an hour and a half. I’m gonna change out of my travel clothes and head on over to meet with the group.”

“All right, here’s the key card.” Naima walked over and placed the card in her hand.

“Thanks.”

Snorkeling, hiking, and the chance to eat at Rudy’s held top spots on her to-do list. Time was her main ingredient.

Saltwater Siren by Muffy Wilson
Was it love at first sight? Perhaps. Many thought it might have been the work of the unscrupulous Sea Witch, Hermione, long a bitter and banished King’s Court Matron. So, was it the crafty wiles of Hermione, scheming to seek her sordid revenge, or was it a simple matter of serendipity? All we know for certain is that two young royals, one landed and one not, met during a raging storm as fierce and intense as the love they would none too soon escape. Was it fate, design, or—perhaps—black magic? Who’s to say?
What we do know is that it was sensuous, erotic, and insatiable as they fought to extinguish the passions that flamed their heat by indulging in every desire that swept them into one another’s arms. Their shared carnal voracity fanned an appetite no amount of indulgence could satisfy.
After all, it happened…Once upon a time…

Kiss of the Fallen by Kharma Kelley

Dear Readers,
I just wanted to be left alone. I wanted nothing to do with the war brewing among all the Supernaturals and have grown tired of fighting all these centuries. All of us are screwed up anyway; but who am I to judge who drinks blood and who eats souls?

As luck (or lack thereof) would have it, I get sucked into one last mission with the vampires and the next thing I know, I find a half-naked demon chained to my bed; and let’s just say she is not happy.  And, as much as I enjoy seeing a beautiful woman grace my bed, unfortunately, I’m not happy either.

Of all demons, someone delivers to me a Black Blood Slayer; demons bred to do one thing and one thing only: kill vampires.  Her blood is spiked with a desire I long to tame, but if I do, I could be six-feet under… again. And this time forever.  But her fighter’s spirit and tenderness shakes me to my missing soul, wanting to claim her with a need I cannot name.  But with both of us on the run and my people gunning for us, how can I be sure she wants me to love or to kill?

-Commander Tristan Castillion, Vampire Royal Guard
Selene by Shelique Lize
My name is Selene and I am a moon goddess. Between my siblings and me, we control the balance of the universe. Without us, the mortal and immortal realms would be thrust into eternal chaos. Don’t ask me what that means. It’s what I’ve been told for as long I can remember. I have never questioned my existence because it was the only life I have ever known. Then one day, everything changed when I became enthralled with the earth.
I couldn’t resist the alluring beauty that beckoned me almost every single night. My curiosity was so fierce and dominate, it was becoming impossible to ignore it and I gave in. I found the only god brave enough to take me to the mortal realm but he wanted something in return. He wanted my body, and I gave it to.
I went to earth and experienced life like never before. It was like my eyes were opening and I started to question my entire existence. Feelings all of a sudden are very present and then everything changed again, when I fell in love with a human.
Being a goddess has never been so complicated.

Review, a New Release, and an Excerpt: So I Married a Sorcerer by Kerrelyn Sparks.

So I Married a Sorcerer

So I Married a Sorcerer

The Embraced Series, Book 2

by Kerrelyn Sparks

Review By Tamye

☕☕☕☕☕

Disclosure: I was given an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. (Although I will be purchasing a print version of this book once it’s published for my bookcase.)

Super Fun Read! One of my absolute favorites.

I loved this book so much I went out and bought the first book in the series. Not that book two didn’t stand on it’s own. It did, splendidly. But all the secondary characters were so interesting and the hint of their own stories so intriguing that I just had to read more. You can be sure I’ll get each of the following stories as soon as they are available.

Brigitta grew up on the Island of Mann. Luckily she had her sisters. Not sisters of blood, but of the heart. They, like herself were left or abandoned at the island’s convent as babes. As the sisters are sailing to visit with their other sister, Luciana their ship is attacked. To keep her sisters safe, Brigitta agrees to go with the Notorious Pirate Rupert. Bringing along her trusty sidekick and chaperone, Sister Fallyn. Who will make sure Brigitta’s virtue is preserved while keeping us in stitches. Lord, or should I say Goddesses, that woman is hilarious.

Rupert, or The Notorious Pirate Rupert as he’s called by most, or Horrid Rupert as he’s called by Brigitta, and The Dread Pirate Rupert as I can’t help but call him. This book has that fun quality of The Princess Bride so every time I read Pirate Rupert, I heard The Dread Pirate Rupert. Luckily it doesn’t distract from the book.

Rupert has kidnapped Princess Brigitta to get revenge against her brother, the Turian king. Yep, she’s a princess. Who knew? Not Brigitta, but Rupert and her brother, King Gunther did. It seems now she’s to be a pawn in their ongoing battle, where Rupert steals from the Turian King, then the king throws a tantrum.

This story has lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing. The world building is excellent, the story is well thought out and seamlessly woven with a balanced mixture of tension, humor, and romance. I can’t begin to tell you how much I enjoyed reading this book. It’s one that I will go back to over and over in order to visit with the fun yet complex characters in Kerrelyn Sparks’ world of the embraced.

I give this book my highest rating, “Bookshelf Space”. If you like The Princess Bride you will definitely want to get a copy of this book. Also if you like paranormal romance, fantasy, or you just like a really good read. This one has it all.

**Bookshelf space = I’ll give the book one of the coveted yet limited spots in my bookshelves.

What others have to say:

“The Embraced series will not let you down! Just like in book one, there is a layered heroine and hero, and supporting characters whose lives add to the story and humor. Set in the past, the series has a decidedly fantasy slant that is easy to follow, which makes this delightfully fun to read. Readers are gifted with a well-executed read with kings, dragons and pirates”
—RT Book Reviews

“Readers will be fully invested in this Embraced series!” — Romantic Times on How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days “Readers will relish Spark’s lovingly detailed and memorable tale and look forward to the next.”
— Booklist on How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days

“[Sparks] has produced a book that I’ll come back to again and again. I’ll be counting down the days till the next girl gets her story.”
— Night Owl Reviews on How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days

Kerrelyn Sparks is no stranger to the New York Times bestseller list, as her massive fan base couldn’t seem to get enough of her Love at Stake series. Sparks then introduced her extraordinary fantasy romance series, The Embraced, with How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days last March. Set in a medieval mythical world, the series follows a special group of people with powers born when the two moons of the world form an eclipse. Now comes the captivating second installment, SO I MARRIED A SORCERER (St. Martin’s Paperbacks; August 29, 2017), where readers meet Brigitta, our fierce and powerful new heroine.

Growing up on the Isle of Moon, Brigitta knows nothing of her past, except that she is Embraced: born with powers that forced her into hiding. Everything changes when she learns she’s a princess, hidden away from her villainous half-brother who now rules the kingdom. But he knows about Brigitta, and he’ll do anything to get her back. Unless a certain roguish pirate has anything to say about it.

Rupert is both an infamous pirate and a sorcerer with the power to harness the wind. He’s been waiting nineteen years for revenge—and he needs Brigitta to get it. What begins as a kidnapping of the fiery beauty turns into a fierce attraction. But can he win the captive princess’s heart?

Filled with romance, adventure, and a vividly imagined new world, SO I MARRIED A SORCERER is a fantasy in the vein of Game of Thrones with all the fun of The Princess Bride. Audiences will become enthralled with spunky Brigitta and her misunderstood captor, in a world where passion, fantasy, and royal intrigue collide. The characters put everything on the line as it is not just their relationship at stake, but their survival as well.

Chapter One

“I cannot play,” Brigitta told her sisters as she cast a wary look at the linen bag filled with Telling Stones. Quickly she shifted on the window seat to gaze at the Great Western Ocean. The rolling waves went on for as far as she could see, but her mind was elsewhere. Calm yerself. The prediction will ne’er happen.

At dawn they had boarded this ship, accompanied by Mother Ginessa and Sister Fallyn, who were now resting in the cabin next door. This was the smallest vessel in the Eberoni Royal Navy, the captain had explained, sturdy enough to cross the ocean, but small enough to travel up the Ebe River to the palace at Ebton. There, they would see their oldest sister, who was now the queen of Eberon.

According to the captain, Queen Luciana had intended to send more than one ship to safeguard their journey, but at the last minute the other naval ships had been diverted south to fight the Tourinian pirates who were raiding villages along the Eberoni shore. But not to worry, the captain had assured Brigitta and her companions. Since the royal navy was keeping the pirates occupied to the south, their crossing would be perfectly safe.

Indeed, after a few hours, it seemed perfectly boring.

“If we don’t play, how will we pass the time?” Gwennore asked from her seat at the round table. “’Twill be close to sunset afore we reach Ebton.”

“I wish we could wander about on deck,” Maeve grumbled from her chair next to Gwennore. “’Tis a lovely spring day, and we’re stuck down here.”

Sorcha huffed in annoyance as she paced about the cabin. “Mother Ginessa insisted we remain here. I swear she acts as if she’s afraid to let anyone see us.”

“Perhaps she fears for our safety because we are Embraced,” Gwennore said.

Sorcha shook her head. “ We’re safe now in Eberon.”

But only in Eberon, Brigitta thought as she studied the deep blue waves. Being Embraced was a death sentence anywhere else on the mainland. The other kings abhorred the fact that each of the Embraced possessed some sort of magical power that the kings, themselves, could never have.

When Brigitta and her adopted sisters were born, the only safe haven had been the Isle of Moon. They’d grown up there in the Convent of the Two Moons, believing they were orphans. But almost a year ago, they’d discovered a shocking truth. Luciana had never been an orphan.

Since then, Brigitta had wondered if she had family somewhere, too. Had they hidden her away or, worse, abandoned her? She feared it was the latter. For in all her nineteen years of life, no one from the mainland had ever bothered to contact her.

You are loved, she reminded herself. She’d grown up in a loving home at the convent. Her sisters loved her, and she loved them. That was enough.

It had to be enough. Didn’t it?

Sorcha lowered her voice. “I still believe Mother Ginessa knows things about us that she won’t tell.”

Brigitta silently agreed. She knew from her special gift that almost every one was hiding something.

“Let’s play the game and let the stones tell us,” Maeve said. “I need to do something. This cabin is feeling smaller by the minute.”

Brigitta sighed. Sadly enough, this was the largest cabin on board. Captain Shaw had lent them his quarters, which had a large window overlooking the back of the vessel.

The ship creaked as it rolled to the side, and Sorcha grabbed the sideboard to steady herself.

“Have a seat afore ye fall,” Gwennore warned her.

“Fine.” Sorcha emptied the oranges from a brass bowl on the sideboard, then plunked the bowl onto the table as she took a seat. “Let’s play.”

Brigitta’s sisters gave her a questioning look, but she shook her head and turned to gaze out the window once again. It had been twelve years ago, when she was seven, that Luciana had in vented the game where they could each pretend to be the Seer from the Isle of Mist. They’d gathered up forty pebbles from the nearby beach, then painted them with colors and numbers. After the stones were deposited in a bowl and covered with a cloth, each sister would grab a small handful of pebbles and what-ever colors or numbers she’d chosen would indicate her future.

“We’ll just have to play without her,” Sorcha grumbled. A clattering noise filled the cabin as the bag of Telling Stones was emptied into the brass bowl, a noise not quite loud enough to cover Sorcha’s hushed voice. “Ye know why she won’t play. She’s spooked.”

Brigitta winced. That was too close to the truth.

She could no longer see the Isle of Moon on the horizon. As the island had faded from sight, a wave of apprehension had washed over her, slowly growing until it had sucked her down into an undertow of fear and dread. For deep in her heart, she believed that leaving the safety of the convent would trigger the set of events that Luciana had predicted.

But how could she have refused this voyage? Luciana would be giving birth soon, and she wanted her sisters with her. She also needed Mother Ginessa, who was an excellent midwife.

“I’m going first,” Sorcha declared, and the stones rattled about the bowl as she mixed them up.

“O Great Seer,” Maeve said, repeating the line they spoke before each prediction. “Reveal to us the secrets of the Telling Stones.”

“What the hell?” Sorcha muttered, and Maeve gasped.

“Ye mustn’t let Mother Ginessa hear ye curse like that,” Gwennore warned her. “ These stones are ridiculous!” Sorcha slammed them on the table, and out of curiosity Brigitta turned to see what her sister had selected.

Nine, pink, and lavender.

Gwennore tilted her head as she studied the stones. “In nine years ye will meet a tall and handsome—”

“Nine years?” Sorcha grimaced. “I would be so old!”

“Twenty-seven.” Gwennore’s mouth twitched. “Practically ancient.”

“Exactly!” Sorcha huffed. “I’ll wait nine months for my tall and handsome stranger, and not a minute more.” She glared at the colored stones. “I hate pink. It looks terrible with my freckles and red hair.”

Maeve’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Who said ye would be wearing it? I think yer true love will look very pretty in pink.”

“He’s not wearing pink,” Sorcha growled.

“Aye, a lovely pink gown with a lavender sash,” Gwennore added with a grin.

“Nay, Gwennie.” Maeve shook her head. “The lavender means he’ll have lavender- blue eyes like you.”

“Ah.” Gwennore tucked a tendril of her white-blond hair behind a pointed ear. “Could be.”

“Are ye kidding me?” Sorcha gave them an incredulous look. “How on Aerthlan would I ever meet an elf?”

“Ye met me,” Gwennore said. “And apparently, in nine months, ye’ll meet a tall and handsome elf in a pink gown.” She and Maeve laughed, and Sorcha reluctantly grinned.

Brigitta turned to peer out the window once again. Over the years, the Telling Stones had proven to be an entertaining game. But then, a year ago, something strange had happened. Luciana’s prediction for her own future had actually come to pass. She’d met and fallen in love with the tall and handsome stranger she’d foretold in specific detail, using the Telling Stones. And if that hadn’t been amazing enough, she’d become the queen of Eberon.

Eager to experience something equally romantic, Brigitta had begged her oldest sister to predict a similar future for her.

A mistake. Brigitta frowned at the churning ocean.

Blue, gold, seven, and eight. Those had been the stones Luciana had selected. Blue and gold, she’d explained, signified the royal colors of the kingdom of Tourin. Seven meant there would be seven suitors to compete for her hand. And eight . . . in eight months, Brigitta would meet a tall and handsome stranger.

The eight months had now passed.

She pressed a hand against her roiling stomach.

When they’d boarded this morning, she’d quickly assessed the captain and his crew. None of them had struck her as particularly tall or handsome. Captain Shaw was portly, bald, and old enough to be her father.

As for the seven suitors vying for her hand, she had initially been thrilled, considering the idea wildly exciting. But when her sisters had likened it to her being a prize in a tourney, she’d had second thoughts.

Why would seven men compete for her? She had nothing special to offer. Even the gift she possessed for being Embraced was hardly special. And did this contest mean she would have no choice but to marry whichever man won her? The more she’d thought about this competition, the more it had made her cringe.

So, five months ago, she’d played the game again, hoping to achieve different results. But to her shock, there had been four stones in her hand.

Blue, gold, seven, and five.

Had some sort of mysterious countdown gone into effect? Reluctant to believe that, she’d attempted the game again a month later. Blue, gold, seven, and four. Alarmed, she’d sworn never to play again.

But one month ago, Sorcha had dared her to play, taunting her for being overly dramatic. Those words never failed to irk Brigitta, so she’d accepted the dare. With a silent prayer to the moon goddesses, she’d reached into the bowl, swished the pebbles around, and grabbed a handful. And there, in her palm, four stones had stared up at her.

Blue, gold, seven, and one. A fate was shoving itself down her throat whether she liked it or not.

And she did not.

Brigitta had been raised on the Isle of Moon, where women were free to determine their own futures and every one worshiped the moon goddesses, Luna and Lessa.

It was different on the mainland. Men were in charge there, and every one worshiped a male god, the Light. Luciana had been fortunate to find a good man who respected her in dependent nature. As king and queen, they had declared it safe to worship the moon goddesses in Eberon.

But it was not that way elsewhere. In the other mainland kingdoms, Brigitta would be executed for making the sign of the moons as she prayed. Executed for being Embraced. So why did she keep picking the blue and gold colors of Tourin?

And why would seven suitors compete for her? She glanced at her sisters. Sorcha had always seemed the strongest, with a fiery temperament that matched her fiery red hair. Gwennore had always been the smartest. Maeve, the youngest, had always been the sweetest. And Luciana — now married— had been their brave leader. Brigitta had never been quite sure where she fit in.

Gwennore, with her superior intellect, had always been the best at translating books into different languages. Maeve had excelled in penmanship, and Sorcha in artwork. Luciana had been good at every thing.

But Brigitta . . . the nuns had despaired with her. When transcribing a book, she could never stay true to the text. A little embellishment here, a tweak there, and eventually she would take a story so off course, it was no longer recognizable. This, of course, upset the nuns, for their male customers on the mainland were paying for an exact copy of an old tale, not the romantic fantasies of an overly dramatic young woman.

Whenever the nuns had fussed at her, her sisters had come to her defense, insisting that her story was much better than the original. And each time the nuns tried to use Brigitta’s overly dramatic mistakes for kindling, her sisters always managed to rescue the pages and give them to her. They’d even begged her to finish her stories about dashing young heroes, so that they could read them.

Brigitta adored them for that. She’d do anything for her sisters, including this voyage to Eberon that she was so afraid would activate the events she’d been dreading.

She shifted her gaze back to the rolling motion of the ocean, and her stomach churned. Did a person’s destiny have to be set in stone, in this case the Telling Stones? This was her story, so why couldn’t it be one of her making? Surely she didn’t have to stick to a text that had already been written without her consent. Couldn’t she be the author of her own destiny?

“Ye should watch the horizon, not the waves,” Maeve said as she sat next to Brigitta on the window seat. “ ’Tis a sure way to make yerself ill.”

“Oh.” Brigitta turned to her youngest sister. “I didn’t realize . . .” Her stomach twisted with a sharp pain, and she winced.

Gwennore gave her a worried look. “Ye look pale. Would ye like some bread or wine?” She motioned toward the sideboard and the food that had been left for them.

Brigitta shook her head. Perhaps if she sat perfectly still for a few moments, the nausea would pass. “Did ye finish playing the Game of Stones?”

“Aye,” Maeve answered. “ Didn’t ye hear us giggling?”

Brigitta groaned inwardly, not wanting to admit she’d been too engrossed in her own worries to pay her sisters any mind.

“My prediction was the best,” Maeve continued. “In four years, I’ll meet a tall and handsome stranger with green teeth, purple hair, and three feet.”

Brigitta wrinkled her nose. “Ye call that handsome? How can he have three feet? Does he have a third leg?”

Maeve waved a dismissive hand. “We didn’t bother to figure that part out. But he is taller than most.”

“Aye.” Sorcha snorted. “By a foot.”

Maeve grinned. “As ye can see, the game is nonsense. Besides, I have no desire to meet any man, no matter how tall or handsome. I plan to live the rest of my life with all of you at the convent.”

“Aye,” Sorcha agreed. “I’m not leaving my sisters for an elf in a pink gown. ’Tis naught but a silly game.”

“Exactly.” Gwennore gave Brigitta a pointed look. “So ye shouldn’t believe anything the stones say.” “Something is amiss,” Gwennore said as she gazed up at the ceiling. “ They’re running about.”

They were doing their best to relieve her fear, Brigitta realized, and as her heart warmed, the ache in her stomach eased. “Thank you. What would I do without ye all?”

The ship lurched suddenly to the right, causing Brigitta and Maeve to fall against the padded wall of the window seat. The oranges rolled off the sideboard and plummeted to the wooden floor. Empty goblets fell onto the floor with a series of loud clunks.

Sorcha grabbed on to the table. “What was that?”

Loud shouts and the pounding of feet sounded on the deck overhead.

Maeve peered out the window. “I believe we made a sudden turn to the south.”

“That would put us off course,” Gwennore murmured.

The door slammed open, and they jumped in their seats.

Mother Ginessa gave them a stern look, while behind her Sister Fallyn pressed the tips of her fingers against her thumbs, forming two small circles to represent the twin moons.

ARC Review, New Release & Giveaways: BOHEMIA NIGHTS by Lucy Lakestone

Bohemia Nights by Lucy Lakestone

A DELICIOUSLY INDECENT PROPOSAL …

Thea McKay likes her quiet, private life well enough. She creates pop-up paper art that no one ever sees, hangs out with her friends and admires men from afar. But then, at a play premiere, she meets gregarious video blogger Duncan Flyte. An incorrigible charmer with dubious motives, he’s handsome, hilarious and overwhelming. When he says he won’t stop showcasing her to his legions of fans unless she agrees to spend seven nights with him, her world turns upside down. The offer is both outrageous and tempting. Those seven nights don’t have to be passionate, but what if Thea wants them to be? Can she raise the stakes with this adorable Scottish import — especially when Duncan’s cheerful campaign to woo her may be just one more spectacular lie that will break her heart?

This is the fifth novel in the award-winning Bohemia Beach series, each a steamy standalone romance set among a circle of young artists in the enchanting Florida city they call home.

Review By Tamye

Disclosure:  I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Oh my sweet bananas!  I absolutely fell in love with this book and its cast of characters.

While this is the fifth book in the Bohemia Beach series, it was the first book I’ve read in this series, and by this author.  It definitely stands well by itself.  No need to have read the previous four books to understand the story. That being said, I now want to read the first four books because the lead characters from each book were in the fifth book and I’m dying to hear their stories as well.

I glanced at the first paragraph and I was hooked.  I only wanted to see what point of view the book was written in, as I was in the midst of reading something else. But I couldn’t put it down, I had to to read more.  I had to know why Thea McKay thought Duncan Flyte was a ……. nope not saying.  Get the book and see for yourself.  But be warned.  You will be hooked as well.

The story easily comes to life.  Plopping you smack dab in the middle of this exciting set of friends, with a snarky, yet insecure heroine, who has no idea why this sexy Scot would want to have anything to do with her.  Therefore he must be using her for publicity.  Right? Smart guy that he is, Duncan uses Thea’s dislike of being in the public eye to his advantage.  In exchange for her spending seven night with him, Duncan promises to refrain from featuring Thea on his vlog every night during that time.  Then if at the end of the week she still wants him to get lost, he will.  Or course, Duncan is going to do his best to change her mind.  Thus the fun begins.

Thea agrees despite her certainty that Duncan will break her heart. Somehow her mouth said yes, while her head was saying, “No freaking way!”  It could have been her hormones, and she might have a bit of a crush. One she would deny to everyone, including herself.

Kudos to the author for weaving this tale in a such a way, that while being lighthearted and fun, it also had depth, self-discovery, and enough heat at times to light a fire.

I recommend this to anyone who wants a contemporary love story, that goes from “Hell No!” to “Oh Yes!”.  One that will make you yearn for one of your own.

Lucy Lakestone is an award-winning author who lives on Florida’s east central coast, among the towns that serve as an inspiration for the hot romances of her Bohemia Beach Series. She’s been a journalist, photographer, editor and video producer but prefers living in her imagination, where the moon is full and the cocktails are divine. Lucy is also a launch author for the Barefoot Bay Kindle World with a novel of romantic suspense, Desire on Deadline.

The books in the Bohemia Beach Series can be read as standalone romances, but they have connected characters and settings, so you may wish to read them in order:
Bohemia Beach (a Golden Quill finalist)
Bohemia Light
Bohemia Blues (winner of the Golden Quill and a National Readers’ Choice Awards finalist)
Bohemia Heat
Bohemia Nights
