Record of Wrongs Excerpt © Sharon Kay 2017

Rosie dropped her own hand on top of Cruz’s, tracing small circles on his skin. “You make it sound so easy. How do you do it?”

“I know that if they won’t look past the surface, then I don’t have time for them. They’re not gonna change.”

“You’re right. People are pretty set in their ways. Whether that’s good or bad.” She slowly moved her fingers up his arm, tracing his tattoos. Her touch was tender yet so tempting. Did she realize the effect she had on him? “Didn’t mean to get in tizzy over that. What Thalia said about those guys, it could be nothing.”

“I might like your tizzies.”

“I can’t hide my emotions too well, I guess. Not a good poker face there.”

Turning back onto the main road, Cruz hit the gas and chuckled.

“Though if I was playing for real, then watch out.” She made a sweeping motion in the air in front of her face. “No one knows what I’m thinking.”

What did she just say? He swung a glance to her. “You play poker?”

“Sure do.”

“For real?” That was the last thing he’d expect from his little country girl. “Where’d you learn?”

“Shane taught me.” She twisted in the seat so she was nearly sideways, facing him. “After my accident, I had months of recovery where I just sat around. I read tons of books and watched movies, but I got to a point where I needed something else to do.”

“No shit.”

“So he taught me, and when I got good enough, he’d bring friends over and we’d all play. For chips, of course. I had no income.”

“You keep surprising me, Rosie-girl.”

“Why? Do you play?”

“Yeah.”

“Well then, there you go.” She made a satisfied mm-hmm. “That may be the first thing we have in common.”

He laughed, because she was right. Well, almost. He had a hunch about one other thing, which he hoped to pursue ASAP.

“Wanna play?” she asked softly, reaching to idly caress his bicep.

They were almost at her driveway and her hands were magic on his arm. He’d played poker when everything he had was on the line, both before prison and inside. “I’d have to go easy on you.”

She sucked in a breath. “You did not just say that. Cruz, I’d whip you so bad, this truck would belong to me.”

“Oh really?” He turned into her drive. “Those are fighting words.” He turned to find her eyes locked on him in a playful challenge.

“Damn straight they are.”

He slid his hand from her knee to her smooth thigh. “All right. You’re on, pretty girl.”

“Yes!” She straightened as they neared her house, and he instantly missed her hands on him. “Hmm. What should the stakes be?” She tapped finger on her chin.

He reached the front yard and threw the vehicle in park. Fucking hell. He knew exactly what the stakes should be. He got out and met her as she hopped out and stood by the truck.

“Money? Dinner?” She tilted her head as he moved in close. “Something else?”

He laid both hands on the metal behind her, caging her in his arms. “Something else.”

“Yeah? Like what?” Blue eyes flashed with a delighted spark. “What do you feel like losing?’

His body had set its cross hairs on Rosie the day they met. He brushed one hand along her shoulder, stopping at the straps of her doubled-up tank tops. He tugged gently. “Our clothes.”

Synopsis

Merde!

That’s exactly what Max Devereux’s former life was-pure crap.

He’s re-invented himself. Now he’s the Premier Danseur and Choreographer at the hottest ballet company in Chicago.

He’s also a premier player. All the dancers know it.

Moving from girl to girl. Bed to bed. No one has ever compelled him to be faithful.

No one has ever felt like home.

His stunning boss and artistic director, Mariette Gallant, bets him he’ll be in love in three months.

The prize if he doesn’t?

A night with Mariette. Max takes the bet-eagerly. This will be an easy win.

Enter Awkward.

Victoria Awkward.

The gorgeous, strawberry blonde ballerina with the unfortunate last name.

She is ANYTHING but Awkward and she can dance and charm as well as he can.

The best way to motivate Max to do something is to forbid him.

Mariette has put Miss Awkward off limits.

All bets are off.

Excerpt

Pushing open the dance studio door, I look down at the clipboard and call the next name. This must be a f-ing joke.

“Awkward!”

Even as I shout the name, I’m thinking, “Great! Judging by this girl’s name, this should be a f-ing treat!”

“Victoria Awkward!”

A hand reaches down to pick up a dance bag among the sea of tightly bunned auditionees, and I assume it’s Miss Awkward gathering her items. I turn to walk back into the studio, sure she’s following me by the soft footsteps behind me. No need to make eye contact. With that name, this audition shouldn’t last long. Still perusing the clipboard, I return to my seat at the skirted banquet table and whisper to my dick-stiffening boss and the owner of Gallant Ballet, Mariette, “Get ready for a treat. This one is actually named ‘Awkward.’ ”

Mariette reaches over to run her perfectly manicured hand down my arm and then pats my hand. “Patience, Max.”

I could get used to her hand on a few more places.

The sound of a dance bag hitting the floor and a deep, rich feminine voice enters my consciousness and wraps itself around my cock in seconds, making it twitch.

“Hello, I’m Victoria Awkward.”

Mariette introduces herself and then me. Now I’m just praying she looks as good as she sounds.

“Yes, I know, Ms. Gallant, Mr. Devereux. It’s an honor to meet you both.”

I look up from my clipboard to see the least awkward thing I’ve ever seen in my life. A statuesque, slim, strawberry blonde. Voice like a velvet hand job. If she moves as well as she looks and speaks, she’s in.

Cover Reveal – Unexpecting by Cynthia St. Aubin

Title: Unexpecting
Author: Cynthia St. Aubin
Series:  Book 7 – The Case Files of Dr. Matilda Schmidt
Paranormal Psychologist
Genre: Paranormal Romantic Comedy
Release Date: December 19th, 2014

When who’s your daddy is a multiple choice question…
Paranormal Psychologist Matilda Schmidt is one client away
from fa-la-la-la-losing it. Holiday cheer is in the air, gun-toting fruitcakes
are in her office, and she’s spinning through mood swings fast enough to make
her toss her cookies–even without the morning sickness.
When Ol’ Kris Kringle goes AWOL after a nervous breakdown,
his disgruntled elf is convinced that only Matilda can get him back on his
sleigh in time to keep humans from tearing each other apart quicker than
couponeers at a Black Friday sale.
But their efforts hit the skids
when the men in Matilda’s life show up and demand to know which of them is
responsible for the bun in her oven: the hot hit man who’s likely to stuff her
stocking with ammunition, or the delicious demigod who’s made Santa’s naughty
list a couple centuries running.
I like
gravy.

This has
nothing to do with the rest of my bio, but I thought you ought to know.

About the
writing thing…
I wrote
my first play when I was six and made my brothers perform it for my parents. I
charged gum wrappers for admission (a steal, in my opinion, considering I had
handed out the gum wrappers ahead of time). While I seriously doubt you’ll be
seeing any of my formative work on Broadway anytime soon, I can credit these
early experiments with the first of many important lessons I learned about writing:
no matter how brilliant your manuscript is, some kid can go streaking butt-ass
nekkid across the living room, and totally undermine your vision.
Everyone
watches the naked kid because running across the living room with your cheeks
flapping in the breeze is friggin’ hilarious.

Cue the lightbulb moment. People like funny
stuff!

I never
quite gave up on the writing thing, even as I tried my hand at being a dusty
academic turned Executive Assistant (they paid me to nag! How cool is that?),
but in those quiet moments when expense reports had been filed and to-do items
checked off, the funny people in my head kept talking to me.

Yes, I
know they have medication for that. It’s called vodka.
Since
they discourage drinking at work, I started writing instead. What came out was
an amalgamation (vocabulary!) of all the things I love: funny stuff, art,
psychology, food, people, and paranormal critters!
Et voila! The
Case Files of Dr. Matilda Schmidt, Paranormal Psychologist were born.
When I’m
not sitting in my office watching cat videos and pretending to write, I like
cooking, knitting (badly), and reading anything that makes me laugh (like my
bank statements).
I live in
Colorado with my brilliant husband and three surly cats.
