Winterblaze by Kristen Callihan

books are my reality

The Darkest London series is one of the best paranormal romance series. Winterblaze was the best book in the series so far (chronologically speaking). The main character was Poppy Lane. She was bad ass and independent. Over the years she had lied to her husband and her family about what she really did. Her lies were exposed to her husband, Winston, in the last book (Moonlglow) when he discovered the paranormal world.

At the start of the story Poppy and Winston were separated. He was not quick to forgive her for all of her lies. Poppy heard that he was in danger. She rushed off to protect him. They were forced to work to together because the enemy was after both of them. It was nice for a change to have the romance revolve around a married couple. It isn’t a concept that is commonly seen in PNR.

There was…

Enchanted, Inc.: Fresh Air in a Formulaic Genre

Novel Ninja

A pretty good description of me trying to read a random selection from the Paranormal Romance shelf. A pretty good description of me trying to read a random selection from the Paranormal Romance shelf.

Most of the time, when someone refers to “romantic urban fantasy,” my brain starts turning off.

Now, I’m not opposed to chick lit; in fact, I’ve been so far to the other side that when I was a favorite target of schoolyard teasing, the one thing they never managed to get under my skin was that I avidly read Nancy Drew as far back as the fourth grade. I didn’t get why it was weird. I’d already read every Hardy Boys I could get my hands on, after all! But chick lit fantasy seems to mainly be a genre where you have mere variations on a woman swooning over a vampire, werewolf, or . . . well, no, just vampires and werewolves. Yeah. Review: Wicked, by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Lit Meg

Rating: 4/5

So, I went on a Jennifer L. Armentrout kick over the holidays. I read White Hot Kiss, Opposition, and this little beauty.

First: the cover. Meh. That’s the thing about covers for her books — they are never very good, unfortunately. This one is better than most of them; I like the background and the font, but the picture? Not feeling it.

On to other things…

This book takes place in New Orleans, with a 21-year-old woman, Ivy, who is a member of “the Order,” a secret organization who fight the Fae — otherworldly human-appearing nemeses roaming the cities unbeknownst to most humans. After Ivy encounters a Fae with strange powers who is not harmed by her trusty iron stake, she realizes that there is a bigger threat out there. The only person who is willing to be honest with her about that threat is Ren…
